Krishnaism about wisdom:
A saint in Maharastra

In Maharastra, it was considered a very great surrendering to Shri Krishna to go on a pilgrimage to one of Shri Krishna’s temples in Gujurat. It was a very long journey, and the pilgrim would travel all the way on foot. There was a saint of Maharastra who made this pilgrimage carrying water in a cower, a special container for water. It was such a long way, and everyone marvelled at what a surrendered and great saint he was to make this journey carrying the water. However, when he finally reached the foot of the temple, after days and days of travelling, he found a donkey that was dying of thirst. So he gave the water to that donkey. Everybody said “Imagine, you brought this water for miles together, for days together, to offer to the Deity here in this temple, and now you have given it to this donkey?!” The saint replied, “Don’t you know? God has come all the way down here to take the water”.
Shri Krishna and his friend Sudhama

Sudhama and his wife were very, very poor. It was a long time since Sudhama had seen his childhood friend Shri Krishna, and he wanted so much to see him again. His wife said to him “But you cannot go empty-handed to your friend, you must take him something”. So she gave him the only thing that they had, which was some puffed rice (like the rice-crispies that we get today). Sudhama was a little shy you know, and it seemed such a humble gift for his important friend. Sudhama set out on his journey, and finally arrived at Shri Krishna’s palace. But the people at the door only saw a very poor man, looking almost like a beggar, asking to see the great King in person. They said “No, no, you can’t meet him”. So he quietly said “Alright, you just go and tell him that Sudhama has come”. Shri Krishna was sitting on his throne discussing something when the guard announced “Sudhama has come”. Immediately Shri Krishna rushed out and went to the front doors of the palace – he hugged his friend very close to him, he hugged him again and again. And he said “Why are you standing here?” Then he saw the little bundle in his friends hands and said “What is this?” Sudhama was so shy to show his poor gift, but he had nothing else; so he gave it to Shri Krishna saying “My wife has sent this for you”. Shri Krishna opened it, tasted the puffed rice and exclaimed “Oh, but it is my favourite food of all, how clever of your wife to think to send me just this!” And Shri Krishna took him and put him on the throne that he himself was supposed to occupy. And he told his wives, “Please come and wash my friend’s feet”. And then they brought for him clothes and all that, he had a bath, and Shri Krishna made him sleep on his bed. See the love of Shri Krishna in this story! Sudhama had very dirty feet and they were all cracked too, so Shri Krishna put on some sort of medicine to make them better. He tried to do whatever was possible to cure those cracks on the feet of his friend. And he asked him to sleep on his bed. And asked the ladies to fan him so that he didn’t feel hot. See the compassion of Shri Krishna. It is shown so beautifully. Are we that compassionate? Do we have that level of humility? There was no need for him to do that, it was no drama, nothing. But his heart. He took a spontaneous decision. When he heard Sudhama was there, he just rushed there, he just felt so happy that ‘my old friend has come to see me’
